I consider myself fortunate to have 3 cats: Ellis Chara G, a 9-year-old male; Grace Chantal G, an 8-year-old female; and Stanley Charlie Parent, a 3-year-old female. Ellis was adopted from the OSCPA when he was 1 year old, Grace was gifted to me at 3 months old, and we discovered Stanley abandoned in the woods near the lake when she was just 6 weeks old and weighed 1.2 lbs.

After finishing my first year of college studying social service work in the spring of 2016, I adopted Ellis. He holds a significant role in my life, as he has prevented me numerous times from harming myself or consuming excessive alcohol (he would accidentally spill my drinks). As a result, I now limit myself to drinking water, green tea, and occasionally iced coffee.

As I prepared to start my second year, I realized I couldn't leave Ellis alone for more than 8 hours a day. I reached out to my classmates to see if anyone knew of kittens needing a home. Fortunately, one of my classmates, Chantal, mentioned that one of her barn cats had a litter in July. By early October, Grace Chantal G joined our family.

Skipping ahead to the May Lunar Eclipse of 2021, my then-partner took us out to witness the event. As we were getting into the car, I lowered my window and was startled by a loud screeching noise. Upon investigating, we discovered a small kitten peering down at us from halfway up a broken tree trunk. He managed to rescue the tiny kitten, and we brought it back to his place to nurse it back to health. I introduced Stanley Charlie Parent to her siblings so she could learn cat behavior and have some playmates.

Feline companionship can indeed be incredibly rewarding and enriching for individuals who do not suffer from allergies. Cats have been known to have a calming effect on their owners, which can help reduce stress levels and even lower blood pressure. The presence of a feline friend can provide a sense of comfort and companionship, especially during times of solitude or distress. Additionally, interacting with cats has been shown to increase the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of well-being and happiness.

Furthermore, the bond between a person and their feline companion can be deeply fulfilling and emotionally satisfying. Cats are known for their independent yet affectionate nature, offering a unique form of companionship that is both comforting and reassuring. Their playful antics and soothing purrs can bring joy and relaxation to their owners, creating a sense of connection and contentment.

While feline companionship may not be suitable for everyone due to allergies, for those who can enjoy it, the benefits are numerous and significant. From physical health improvements like lower blood pressure to emotional well-being through stress relief and increased serotonin levels, the presence of a feline friend can truly enhance one's quality of life in a multitude of ways.

Until Next Time,

ree
