Every July, I find myself sitting alone, eagerly anticipating the arrival of August, the month that heralds the beginning of my birthday celebrations. It was during this month back in 2008 that a significant event unfolded in my life. The family who had once adopted me made the painful decision to disown me after I bravely disclosed the traumatic memories of the abuse I endured as a child. Despite my honesty and vulnerability, they chose to deny any responsibility for the suffering I had endured. This heartbreaking rejection left me to navigate a path of healing and self-discovery.

As the years passed, I found myself grappling with a myriad of mental health challenges. In the spring of 2023, after receiving diagnoses of Bipolar disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Depression, and Seasonal Affective Disorder, I made the courageous decision to seek therapy. This marked a turning point in my journey towards understanding and managing my mental health struggles.


Reflecting on my past, I recall a time when I was married, but now I find myself living independently in a cozy one-bedroom apartment, accompanied by my three beloved feline companions - Ellis, Grace, and Stanley. Since embarking on my therapeutic journey in 2023, I have learned the importance of not only celebrating my birthday but also embracing all occasions with a spirit of self-love and appreciation, a lesson instilled during my therapy sessions.


When faced with the prospect of celebrating a birthday alone, I have discovered numerous ways to infuse the day with joy and meaning. Creating a festive ambiance by adorning my living space with affordable yet cheerful decorations from stores like Dollarama sets the stage for a special day. Treating myself to a delectable dessert, perhaps a slice of lemon cake from a nearby bakery, adds a delightful touch to the celebration. Engaging in self-care rituals, whether it's luxuriating in a soothing bath, immersing myself in a favorite book, or enjoying a beloved movie, nurtures my well-being and brings contentment. And when it comes to gifts, ordering a thoughtful present for myself from online retailers like Amazon serves as a tangible expression of self-appreciation.


In essence, celebrating a solo birthday has evolved into a deeply fulfilling experience for me, characterized by a blend of self-love, relaxation, and personal indulgence. Through these rituals, I have learned to cherish and honor myself, finding solace and joy in the simple yet profound act of celebrating my existence and journey.
