When you think of the word "Godmothers," what comes to mind? For me, it's the fairy godmother from Cinderella with her magical "bippity boppity boo." I think every little girl wished for a godmother after watching the movie. Personally, I wanted a nanny after seeing Mary Poppins!
Growing up in the adoptive family that took me in, I experienced a deep sense of isolation, feeling out of place due to my skin color being distinct from the rest of the Caucasian family. They never provided me with an understanding of my identity or background, forcing me to realize through difficult experiences that my culture was marginalized as I was raised.
Looking ahead 40 years, I find myself residing with my college best friend. We lived together for 14 months starting in 2019. During that period, a family friend of hers visited our house every 3 months or so and eventually became a "Godmother/Nana" to her newborn daughter.
Since 2019, when we met the "Godmother/Nana," our online acquaintanceship has evolved into a family bond.
During the summer of 2024, a family friend asked to stay with me while she visited everyone on vacation. I had no objections as long as she understood that my cats are in charge of the apartment. Following her stay, we bonded by sharing updates on our lives over the years. She expressed that I meant a lot to her by saying, "I am like a daughter to her." This sentiment lingered with me after she departed, and since I wasn't comfortable with the term "Mom," we agreed on the title of "GodMommas" for her and "Goddess Daughter" for me. An update: she is now known as "Goddess Mommas."
These unique titles, "GodMommas" and "Goddess Daughter," symbolize a special bond that goes beyond traditional family roles. It's a testament to the strength of chosen family connections and the power of mutual respect and love. The evolution of your relationship from acquaintances to family members showcases the beauty of building meaningful connections with others.
As you reflect on your journey and the people who have become significant in your life, it's clear that family isn't just about blood relations but about the bonds we create with those who truly understand and support us. The term "GodMommas" embodies the nurturing and supportive role this person plays in your life, providing guidance, care, and love in a way that transcends conventional labels.
Until next time,
